galibi

Galibi is a nature reserve of 4000 ha along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It is situated in the north- east of Suriname at the mouth of the Marowijne River along the French Guyanese border. It's know worldwide as an importent sea turtle nesting site.

It has its unique charm in the unspoilt nature of the sea beaches and the Caraib Amerindian culture of the villages Cristiaankondre and Langamankondre. Not only during the nesting season you can enjoy a beautiful beach holiday in Suriname.

The guesthouse is situated in the Amerindian village and during the walks in the village you will get acquainted with the culture of these gentle proud people. The village stretches out 2 kilometers long along the beach and gets it characteristic look from the many coconut palms and mango trees. Along the whole beach you will see boots in the water. Galibi is known for its Piaka, a seaworthy indigenous boot, weaving, ceramics and bead jewels. The most important source of income is fishing.

The beaches in the mouth of the Marowijne River are the second most important nesting beach of the leatherback. It's hard to believe that these prehistoric creatures once populated the world together with the dinosaurs. The nesting season of these magnificent creatures is from March till the end of July. On the Surinamese beaches three seaturtle species come ashore to lay their eggs:

  • de Krape or green turtle (Chelonia mydas)
  • de Aitkanti or leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)
  • de Warana of olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea)
