The Commewijne district is situated east of Paramaribo across the Suriname River.
During these tours we visit several villages where in the past sugar, cocoa, coffee and cotton plantations once had there glory period.

To protect the prosperous plantations and the hinterland and also to support Fort Zeelandia, a number of military posts and forts were build.

In 1734 the foundation stone was laid for Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. The fort is a star fort with 5 bastions and has an earthen foundation and walls. Since 1968 part of the fort is in use as open air museum. Some of the buildings are in use as administrative buildings.
The channels and picturesque sluices, the remains of old plantation buildings, some of them still in use, are a testimony of the dynamic past of the Commewijne district.

At present fishery, animal husbandry and farming are the main activities of the javanese and hindustani's, descendants of indentured laborers from Java and India.

The plantation Frederiksdorp has recently been restored. The disrepaired houses have been turned into hotel accommodations and the former prison has been turned into a restaurant

The bicycle and bus tours stay on the left bank of the Commewijne river, with the exception of the river cruise and the bicycle tour with Frederiksdorp included.
