brokopondo lake

Several islands, lying in a surrealistic way in the van Blommestein reservoir. From the lake you have a beautiful view of the hilly area of Brownsberg.

In the sixties of the last century a piece of tropical rainforest the size of 1560 square kilometer has been flooded to create an artificial lake to provide hydroelectric power for the bauxite processing. The trees were left standing to lower the construction costs of the reservoir, but the animals were rescued during operation Gwamba.

Only the hill tops and irregular tree trunks rise above the water level. Beautiful boat tours between the tree trunks, bright night skies and overwhelming nature make a visit to the lake worthwhile.

In the surrounding rainforest you find Saramaccan and Aucan maroon villages who live according century old African traditions.

For a quick visit we have the Brokopondo tour. Do you prefer to stay longer we recommend the multiple day Paradise island tour where you can relax, swim, sunbathe and fishing
