Here you will find the Saramaccan maroons, the biggest of the six maroon tribes in Suriname. Much of their daily livelihood they get from the surrounding rainforest. Their food consists of rice, vegetables, fruits, cassava, fish and bush-meat. More than 90 percent of the houses are still traditionally built. Although many people use western clothing, traditional clothing can still be seen.
Beside some slash and burn farming, hunting and fishing are part of their livelihood. Implements, woodcarving and ornaments are being sold.
Once you are at Bakaa Boto, the local surroundings, nature and culture shall draw your attention.
