The Nickerie district is located in western Suriname and borders Guyana. The area is characterized by vast polders and beautiful rice fields.
Because of these rice fields, alternated with palm trees and the vast polders you alternately think you are in Indonesia or the Netherlands.

Nickerie is also known as the rice granary of Suriname. It are mainly the Javanese and Hindustanis who are working in the rice sector. Unlike many countries in Asia, the cultivation of rice in Suriname is highly mechanized. The preparation of the land before planting, sowing, fertilizing, pest management and harvesting are all done mechanically. Not only rice is grown and processed here but there is also rice research. New varieties of rice are developed by the Anne van Dijk Rijstonderzoekscentrum Nickerie (Anne van Dijk Rice Research Center Nickerie) - ADRON in the Europolder.
In this rice district, also many bananas are grown. The largest plantation is in the Julianapolder. Nickerie is sparsely populated and the biggest part (7500 people) lives in the quiet, pleasant capital New Nickerie.
