Once escaped from slavery on the plantations, they successfully founded communities in the tropical rainforest. Because of their remote location traditions were hardly influenced by western culture and long forgotten cultural and religeus African traditions are still in use here in the Surinamese interior. A very interesting location for both nature as culture lovers.
